ITS–Rice is the main source of the food in many tropical countries, including Indonesia. Rice’s scientific name is Oryzasativa, and it belongs to the Gramineae family. This plant is much like grass. It grows about 50-120 cm high. Its leaf is slender, like a ribbon. This plant needs a lot of waterto grow. But there are some varieties that demand less water. This kind of rice is commonly cultivated in a rid regions or in mountainous regions. The Indonesian people call this variety “padi gogo”, while common rice is called “padi.” The plant is generally cultivated in rice fields with continuous irrigation. The crop can be obtained about 3-4 months after planting. In some well-irrigated regions, people can harvest the crops three times a year.
People make many variations to rice, which differ from one region to another.
