E-106-1-RADEN-SALEHITS–Most Indonesian painters are inspired by mythology and spiritualism. But some are also influenced by social reality, as well as an emphaty for the “have not” societies of the world.

The pioneer of modern Indonesian art was Raden Saleh (1807-1880). The paintings of this modern artist were bought at a high price at an auction in Christies’ Public Sale Building, Singapore, in March 1994. There, one of Raden Saleh’s paintings was sold for $300,000 (Singapore) (Rp. 405,000,000)

The title of that painting is, “The Eruption of the Mt. Merapi Volcano”. Painted in 1886 with oil framed canvas, it is 61.8 cm x 104.4 cm. In that particular auction his work was able to compete with 92 other ASEAN artists.  This was the first time an Indonesian painting was held on auction in Singapore
