ITS–The mountain of Tangkuban Perahu in West Java is a volcano which, from distance, looks like a “perahu” (boat) turned upside down. It has three craters, Upas, Domas, and Ratu, which according to experts, took shape after the several past eruptions, in 1829, 1846, 1887, 1910, 1926, and 1929.
The Upas and Ratu craters lie around 1,830 m above sea level, while the Domas crater is lower, around 1,650 m above sea level. To the north of the craters, there are some peaks, of which the highestis around 2,084 m high.
A legend has it that the mountain appeared after a young man kicked away his boat. The man loved a woman, who he did not realize was actually his mother. Once he learned of the woman’s identity, the man angrily kicked away the boat he made for her as a token of his love.
The mountain is popular among mountaineers. From the top of the mountain, people can enjoy a beautiful panorama of the Java Sea, as well as the ravines around the area, and the towns of Bandung, Cimahi, and Subang.
