F-27-1-SOKAITS–Another name for this plant is “ixora”. In Indonesian the jungle geranium is called “kembang soka” or “soka merah”. This plant is abundant and grows easily in Indonesia and other tropical countries. The erect shrub may reach a height of 1-3 meters. The jungle geranium’s scientific name is Ixoracoccinea (L.), and it belongs to the Rubiaceae family.

There is a singular oblong and oval leaf. The flower produces no scent, and its corolla is shaped like tube, reaching a length of 2-4.5 centimetres. Its many flowers are scarlet, orange, or red-orange, and the calyx is short and hairy. The fruit are little, green or brown, and contain some seeds. The plant is easily propagated by seeding or cloning.

As an ornamental plant, the jungle geranium has also been popular with gardeners andbeen developed to produce several varieties. People often use the ixora as a parental source to create a hybrid, a beautiful scarlet flower. Besides its ornamental use, people also use the roots of this plant as the main substance for a natural yellow dye that comes from its roots.
