ITS–Indonesias largest lake of Toba organized a two day-carnival in conjunction with the 71st anniversary of Indonesias Independence Day from 20th to 21st August 2016. Aside from signifying a milestone of the country’s achievements, the event is expected to boost Lake Toba as a prime tourist destination.
“North Sumatra Province has a lot of attractive tourist destinations that need to be developed. After all, a presidential regulation on Lake Toba Tourism Management Authority Board was also established last June,” Tourism Minister Arief Yahya told the press in Parapat, in North Sumatra Saturday as quoted by Antara.
Featuring representations from all 34 provinces of the Indonesian Archipelago, the Carnival was attended by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Minister/State Secretary Pratikno, Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, State Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno, Tourism Minister Arief Yahya and Environmental Affairs and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya.
The parade started from Soposurung and finish at the Juara Monang Bridge. Highlighting the event was musical performances from some of the country ’stop artists including Slank and Sammy Simorangkir, a traditional Batak Opera, decorated lantern parade, a culinary folk festival, and more.
Adding to the spark of the carnival, a colossal stage was set up,not on land but one floating right on the lake, somewhat off shore from Bebas Beach at Parapat, Simalungun Regency. Measuring 24 meters in length, 12 meters wide, with a height of 6 meters, the stage was not only similar in size to those constructed for huge concerts but it is also the first and largest ever set on Lake Toba.
