E-25-1-ISTORAITS–Gelora Bung Karno is a sports center which is located in Senayan, which lies in Central Jakarta. Gelora is a loose abbreviation of gelanggang olahraga which literally means “sports center”. One of the main buildings in the 80-hectare sports center is Istora (a loose abbreviation of Istana Olahraga which means “sport palace”).The main building is the Senayan Soccer Stadium, with a capacity of 110,000.

Construction of Gelora Bung Karnostarted on February 8th, 1960 upon the order of the then president Sukarno, in preparation for the Fourth Asian Games of 1962. The authorities keep developing its facilities so that now it is the most complete sports facility in the country.

In the beginning, Indonesia built it in cooperation with the former Soviet Union, with architect Semenrdjiev serving as the chief of the project. Construction was completed on May 20th, 1961.

It has been used many times for national and international sports events, especially badminton, exhibitions, and meetings.
